Milano - Bari

How do I get there?

Take the fab night train (Intercity Notte)
  • Milan (departing at 21:56) to
  • Bari (arriving at 07:40).
The TrenItalia train app is an excellent app with which all tickets can be booked in several languages. We were also completely impressed by the Italian train system: punctual, modern, clean - so traveling by train was very pleasant. To arrive at your destination well-rested, we recommend choosing the comfort class on the night train.

What to do?
Visit the clean and picturesque old town, stroll through the (unfortunately not so clean but still pleasant) new town with its numerous stores or take one of the many buses (Google Maps recommended bus no. 22), which will take you to the beach, to Lido San Francesco. In April, access to the sea was free.
Day trip from Bari: Nearby (30 minutes by train) is the beautiful town of Polignano a Mare. Here you can marvel at the cliffs and dip your feet in the sea at Lama monachile. Please note: the town is not an insider tip and rather growed.

Bari - Locorotondo

How do I get there?
The Ferrovie del Sud Est connects the various towns in southern Apulia with modern and clean trains (see photo for the train connection map as well as an overview of the various routes and the rail road company's website).

What to do?
Locorotondo, which means the round town, is situated at an altitude of 410 metres and is a charming, quiet little town with narrow streets and white limestone houses. It is relatively tourist-free in April and is the perfect place to enjoy a few beautiful spring days.
Day trip from Locorotondo: Around the centre of Alberobello you'll find the so-called trulli, white round houses whose pointed caps protrude between olive groves and vineyards. The houses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where to stay?

The Masseria Trulli Bruni is a beautiful complex with a pool (open from mid-May), garden and a spectacular view of the town of Locorotondo. We stayed at the flat just below the trulli with kitchen and several rooms. The Masseria can be easily reached on foot in less than 20 minutes from the train station or around 15 minutes from the city center.

Locorotondo - Martina Franca - Lecce

How do I get there?

Take the train from Locorotondo to Martina Franca and change to the train to Lecce.

What to do?
The city offers many historical sights and winding alleyways. There are good shopping opportunities in the newer part of the city. You can also reach the coast relatively quickly by bus (note: bus no. 114 to the Ionian coast only runs in summer. However, the tourist office organises guided excursions there for around 60 EUR per adult, 40 EUR per child).

The beach of San Cataldo is not recommended as it is extremely dirty (at least in spring 2024). It could be reached by bus no. 16, which departs from Piazza Garibaldi.

For a more or less clean beach it is better to take bus no. 19 in direction Torre Rinalda; departure from the City Terminal. Get off at the "Degli amici" stop. From there it is a 10-minute walk to the beautiful Kalu beach (with good drinks at the beach restaurant).

Where to eat?
Flow Bar serves nice finger food and breakfast.

Where to stay?

We stayed at the BnB antica dimora. The family room is on the top floor (chalet style) and the Italian breakfast is served at the nearby bar.
